I'm following in your footsteps, to learn about life.

You say it's wrong to hit my girlfriend, and yet you beat up your wife!

You say, "Don't drink and drive, it might cause someone to DIE!"

Didn't Mom just bail you out of JAIL,
because you were caught D.U.I.?

You tell me it's wrong to waste my time partying with my friends.
But you leave home on Friday night, and don't come home the whole week-end!

You say I must be honest and not take things that are not mine.
But I saw you take the neighbor's tools, and you thought that was fine.

You really are a piece of work, I've learned so much from you.
When I point out you don't do what you say,
YOU say, "DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO!"

Why should I be any different, you seem to be having fun!
You've heard that old saying,
"LIKE FATHER LIKE SON!"

So if I fail at life I can't be to blame.
The example you set for me is my claim to FAME!

If you think I should be different,
then you best clean up your act!
Because when everything goes WRONG

I'LL BLAME YOU AND THAT'S A FACT!!
Parents aren't always aware of how teens are thinking
and teens find it hard to express their emotional needs during those years.
A LETTER TO PARENTS
Dear Mom & Dad,

Because I can't say these words outloud,
I'm writing you this letter,
To help you understand the way I feel
so you can know me better.

These teenage years are tough!
Do you remember, you've been here too?
Though I say I want to be alone
that's not necessarily true!

Sometimes I say, "Leave me alone!"
When I really need a hug.
I can't seem to tell it like it is,
you reach out and I just shrug.

Then you think that I don't need you,
That's when I really need you more.
I just don't know how to tell you
my feelings always seem to be at war!

I know it's hard to understand me.
It's hard to understand myself!
This time of life is so confusing,
remember, you've been here yourself.

I'm trying to find my way
Between your wants, and following my will.
From a kid to a grown-up
Seems a journey all up hill!

Please have patience with my attitudes
As I try to find my way.
Even though I may resist
I need you in my life today.

It's hard to ask for your attention.
My friends would think I wasn't cool!
So I pretend that I don't need you
To avoid the ridicule!

The journey to my future
I know I cannot make alone.
I need you there to guide me.
I can't make it on my own!

The future is really scarey!
I need your guidance now.
Even though I may resist it
give it to me anyhow.

All the things you work so hard to give me,
I thought I wanted too.
But their pleasure doesn't last long,
What I really need is you!

Could we take time out from things,
And spend more time with just each other,
Before these teenage years have passed us by
And there's no need to bother?

I need your opinion
On what is right and what is wrong,
On which path I should follow.
I need to feel that I belong!

So now you know the way I feel
Through these words I cannot say outloud.
Don't give up on me while I find my way,
My real goal is to make you proud!

Love Always,

Your Kid

Then there is the kid who is trying desperately to reach a parent and  they give up after waiting in line for their turn to be heard.  This kid finds the only way to get their parent's attention is through bad behavior and the price for that attention is very high.
I NEEDED YOU!
When I needed to talk, you didn't have time!
.You had other problems more important than mine!

When I felt all alone and I reached out to you,
You had places to go, more important things to do!

I tried to get your attention!
I needed to know that you cared!
I guess you didn't notice that I was so scared!

I needed your help to decide what to do.
You said, " I'll find time for you later."
I guess that wasn't true!

What should I have done to have earned some of your time?
I tried to be patient while standing in line!

I needed your opinion on the right and the wrong.
On which path to follow, I had the need to belong!

Whenever I failed that always got your attention!
But the good that I did you never did mention.

I've paid a high price for what should have been free!
The price for your attention has cost my future for the fee!

We shared the same house but we never knew each other.

REMEMBER ME---I'M YOUR KID
YOU WERE MY FATHER AND MOTHER!!

Parents

Childhood Pain
A PARENT'S LETTER TO A CHILD.
DEAR SON or DAUGHTER,

Before I had children a parent's role didn't look that hard.
What I thought I knew before I had them, I must now discard!

I remember all the happy times, they now seem so long ago.
That happy little child I knew, disappears the more you grow!

The early years were great, those shared between you and me.
But the older that you get, the more we seem to disagree!

I knew there would be hard times, but the good ones would get us through!
We would travel the road together, CHILD and PARENT, me and you.

Remember, I'm on your side, I'm not the enemy!
I want us to survive these years because you mean the WORLD to ME!

I wanted to be a parent whether you were a daughter or a son.
I knew the day that you were born a new journey had begun!

Someday when you're a parent, it will then be crystal clear.
When you're going through what I am, you'll understand my DEAR!

In order to be a parent you'll survive both love and hate,
from the child you care so much for, it is a PARENT'S FATE!

No matter how you challenge me, even though you think that I'm a TRAITOR.
The saying goes, "Better you should cry now, than we should both cry later!"

Through the tantrums and the trials, I'll renew my LOVE each DAY.
There will be no thought of giving up, for I Am Here To Stay!

If I LOVE too much, I smother you.
If I back away you think that I don't care!
When I make RULES for you to go by, you SCREAM that I'm not FAIR!

You say you want to run away, that I just don't understand!
No matter what I do, I'm wrong, it seems parenthood has no plan!

I started out with good intentions, I only want the best for you.
But we have to work together to make the dream come true!

There's so much I want to be to you, not only a PARENT, but a FRIEND!
I try knocking on your heart's door but you won't let me in!

You tell me things have changed, since the days when I was young.
You surely have that right, there's no comparison!

That doesn't change the need for the rules I have to make.
No one said that you would like them, but your FUTURE is at STAKE!

It's the end result that matters, not the troubles and the strife.
As a PARENT I'll endure them to insure you have a LIFE!

When you have made the passage from a CHILD to being GROWN,
It is then you'll understand that it was LOVE, that brought you safely HOME!

With the journey now behind us we will stand on equal ground--
only then can we appreciate the love and understanding we have found.

Then the BATTLE will be OVER,
We will be a DIFFERENT BLEND,
not just CHILD and PARENT.

FOR THEN WE CAN BE FRIENDS!!

With love,

Your Parent
