I ain't afraid of nothin'!
Nothin' scares me!
I don't run from nobody!
I'm tough as I can be!

I ain't afraid of learnin'.
I just don't like to go to school!
It takes up the time I need,
to prove that I am cool!

I ain't afraid of growin' up!
It don't scare me at all.
My middle name is Trouble,
at least that's what I'm called!

I ain't afraid of rules.
I do what I want to do!
I get high on dope, drink beer,
I hang out with the crew!

I ain't afraid of lock up.
I've done my share of time!
They say I'll end up in prison.
I always tell 'em fine!

I ain't afraid of nothin'!
People say that I am lyin'.
I might be afraid of just two things,
THAT'S LIVIN' AND DYIN'!

Now that I'm a teen,
You must accept that I am grown.
There are no rules that I must follow.
not even from my HOME!

How anyone dare tell me,
what I should or what I shouldn't.
Who did you think you were,
when you told me that I couldn't?

I know my rights!
You can't take them away!
I don't have to listen
to anything you say!

There's nothing you can tell me.
I don't need your advice!
How can you be so dumb,
when I am so wise?

I know what is best for me.
It's my right to have my fun!
I'm only going to be young once.
When I'm old my life is done!

It's anything goes,
I don't need to worry about tomorrow!
Now is my time to party,
to play, to steal, I've no time for sorrow!

This is my body
I'll do with it what I will!
I'll share it with others
until I've had my fill!

I'll drink, I'll drive fast.
I'll even give drugs a try!
I don't have much time
before youth passes me by!

I'll stay out to all hours.
I'll pick my own friends!
I need to have fun
before this world ends!

I don't need your advice,
your love, or direction.
Nothing's going to happen
so I don't need your protection!

I know what I'm doing.
I'm really quite smart.
When I don't go to school
you say, "I'm breaking your heart."

Why can't you accept
that I know my own way!
I'll do what I want,
you've got nothing to say!

I'll have sex without worry
of disease or a child!
I'll live in the moment,
hear the call of the wild!

Bad things happen to others,
not to cool kids like me.
When you're invincible, death and disease
aren't a worry you see?

Where did you go?
I was just talking to you.
I felt something strange happen.
The next thing I heard were the words Code Blue!

Can anyone hear me?
Who turned out the lights?
It's so cold in here
and it's dark as the night.

I take it all back, I don't want my rights.
Give me a chance, I'll listen, I'll try!
Whatever you do
PLEASE DON'T LET ME DIE!

Can anyone hear me?
Hello--Hello!
From the cold and the darkness
there's a silent echo.

I defended my rights
that no one can deny.
THE RIGHT I WISH YOU HAD TAKEN FROM ME
WAS MY RIGHT TO DIE!

I am an Instructional Aide with my County School System.  I work in Community Schools, these are schools for kids on parole or probation.  I also work in County Court schools, such as Juvenile Hall.  The kids I have contact with are ones that seem to make the same bad choices over and over again.  When I use the term my kids on this site I am referring to the kids I work with.  These poems were written for them and about them with the hope I will reach teens that have not yet made that final mistake that will ruin their lives forever.  If we make a  bad choice one time then it is  a mistake, but if we continue to make the same bad choices over and over then we are not learning anything from the experience and the conquences.  I tell my kids, "Life is like fast food.  If you have enough money for lunch and you purchase something that is so terrible you can't eat it and you throw it away and go hungry today, I feel sorry for you.  But if tomorrow you go and make that same purchase, knowing how bad it was yesterday and that you couldn't eat it, then I don't feel sorry for you.  You knew the conquences and did it anyway.  So why should I feel sorry that you are hungry because you made a repeat choice knowing the conquences."

Some kids tell me they can never succeed because of the neighborhood or family they are growing up in.  Some choices we do not make for ourselves, such as what family we are born into and what neighborhood we must live in.  How bad do you want that situation to change?  Do you want it enough to succeed above all odds?  There comes a time in your life when you must stop blaming the family or the situation and take responsibility for your own actions.  In our teens we think we are adults, and don't have to answer to anyone, then we must make good choices, knowing that those things we choose are shaping our lives.  If the adults in our lives cannot make good choices then we must choose to change that in our own lives.

I may be an adult, but I was once a teen and so these poems also reflect my thoughts of being a teen.  The kids think that if you have grown to be a responsible adult then things must have been better for you than what they have to deal with.  Not so.  I have been there done that.  I have gotten the T-Shirt, the CD, and the Cup from adults bad choices for my life.  Still I knew that the choices that I saw before me were not making the adults in my life successful so I needed to change that in my life and I did.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE!
 LIFE IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES!
 CHOOSE CAREFULLY!

EVERYONE HAS RIGHTS BUT MAKE SURE WE DO NOT CONFUSE HAVING RIGHTS WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITIES!

This site has been created with the hope of reaching those that have not yet made too many bad choices and also to reach those who have, to let them know it can be different, it's all up to them.

CHILDHOOD PAIN
If yesterday was built on failures of bad attitude and bad choices,
yesterday becomes tomorrow as it crosses the bridge of today.
Today's bridge to my tomorrows will be built on failures
if I do not change my ways!

That bridge will be built of the things that I've done,
will those things make my life only a waste of time?
If I choose not to change, then tomorrow will always be yesterday
and the fault will all be mine!
When the sun went down on yesterday
the new day that dawned gave me a choice,
to change or to travel that same old road,
"What will you do?" asked the still small voice.

This life is made up of choices.
what happens is all up to you.
The time is short for you to decide,
now I ask you, "What will you do?"

Will you build that bridge from those same mistakes,
Or will you seek to find a better way?
Did yesterday bring you the happiness you longed for,
if not, don't use it to build the bridge to tomorrow today!
Each night as the sun goes down on yesterday
comes the time to check out your life.
You have the chance to change it each morning
if you find that it is full of strife.

If you continue to build today's bridge to tomorrow
with the same old mistakes you made yesterday,
then the future will only repeat itself
as you go from day to day.

To make sure that your future
is not a repeat of yesterday,
the bridge you use to cross over to tomorrow
must change without delay!

The bridge of today will be constructed
of the choices you have made.
If you find those choices are not working
there is a price that will be paid!

If there are no changes made in what you are building today,
then today's bridge may become set in stone.
Yesterday will be your today and all your tomorrows
as you travel into your unknown!
